History

 

The Moscow State University of Psychology and Education is firmly linked with the traditions of the Russian Psychological Science. It was founded on the base of the oldest in Moscow Institute of Psychology of the Russian Academy of Education, established in 1912, by the prominent Russian scientist Professor Georgy Ivanovich Chelpanov.

As for the Psychological Science, it became to take shape in Russia in the middle of the 19th century, and Moscow was the leading center of psychological thought. At the turn of the 19th-20th centuries the main achievements of the young science were connected with the Moscow University, where the outline of a new fundamental school gradually began to take shape. This Moscow scientific school, its search and achievements, the sometimes contradictory theories developed by the school’s representatives affected both spirit of the times, and features of the Russian and Moscow culture. Since the establishment of the Psychological Institute, young talented scientists began to move to Moscow: P.Blonsky, K.Kornilov, A.Severn. After the Revolution A.Leontiev, A.Luria, L.Vygotsky joined them. These names are the golden fund of the Russian science.

2007 was the anniversary year of the University, psychology, education and practice. It is also the 95th anniversary of the Institute of Psychology foundation and the 10th anniversary of the Moscow State University of Psychology and Education foundation. Since the very beginning it has been headed by Professor Vitaly V. Rubtsov, Doctor of Psychology, member of the Russian Academy of Education, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation.
